Ed Specs Information

In May 2010, the Lemon Grove School District Educational Specifications Committee developed an “Ed Specs” document that is intended to assist in our decision-making processes as we continue our Prop M work. Educational specifications guide the development of a physical environment that supports student learning. An architect can look at the Ed Specs, and determine what building and equipment needs are most important to student learning, and can then create construction plans that will have the greatest impact on student learning.

For each educational space, Lemon Grove Ed Specs document is divided into three sections as follows:

1. Discernible Trends: these are “big ideas” that are influencing education today and into the future.
2. Teaching and Learning Activities: informed by the Discernible Trends, committee members determined by grade level and subject area what activities occur within a given school space
3. Facility Considerations: given the Teaching and Learning Activities, this final section outlines the information an architect and builder need to keep in mind as they design the actual educational space.

These Educational Specifications are not intended to be static. The goal is for school environments to evolve along with occupant needs, community concerns, developing educational trends, and pedagogical research. Feedback from students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community members is an essential ingredient for success, and it is the intent of the district to provide stakeholders with periodic opportunities to evaluate the applicability of the Ed Spec document.

Please take the time to review your grade level’s or your subject area’s Ed Spec by clicking here, or clicking the Ed Specs link, and submit your thoughts to the questions below. By answering the following questions, you will assist the Educational Specifications team with a final product.

  • Are all Teaching and Learning Activities in your educational space represented? If not, what is missing?
  • Will the corresponding Facility Considerations adequately allow for the implementation of the identified Teaching and Learning Activities? If not, what is needed?
