Superintendent's Message

Dear LGSD families,

Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) has reported that San Diego county has been hit hard by the flu season with more than 7,300 laboratory-confirmed flu cases so far, which is 8 times more than the total number of cases for the entire season last year. Influenza or the “flu” can be easily spread from person to person, so we are asking for your assistance to help reduce the spread of the flu. We hope to work with families to keep our schools open to students and functioning in a normal manner during this flu season.

Here is what you can do to help:

  • Remind your children to wash their hands often for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water.
  • Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues.  If tissues are not available, coughs and sneezes can be covered with the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of hands.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius or higher), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired.  Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
  • Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone.
  • Please do not send children to school if they are sick.
  • Get the flu shot if you haven’t already.  Flu shots are available at doctors’ offices, retail pharmacies and other locations around the County.  People without health insurance can go to a County Public Health Center which has a list of locations at www.sdiz.org, or by calling 2-1-1.

The school district is cleaning and disinfecting classroom and bathroom locations more frequently during this flu season.  Also, soap dispensers for hand washing in student and staff bathrooms are continuously being filled.  2018 flu updates in San Diego county can be found at the County’s www.sdiz.org website.  Also a video on “What to do to avoid the flu can be found at https://www.countynewscenter.com/what-to-do-to-avoid-the-flu/ .

Yours in Education,

Dr. Kimberly Berman
